E-mail bounce
Updated over a week ago

You send an e-mail and shortly after you receive a bounce message. This article gives you background information about bounce messages and why you receive these.

Background

A bounce message is a message that is sent by the sending mailserver. This can be your own mailserver or one of the mailservers of Carerix. There are several reasons why a message can't be delivered.

Mailbox not available

You see one of the following messages:

  • "Sorry, no mailbox here by that name."

  • "554 Invalid recipient (in reply to RCPT TO command)"

  • "550 sorry, no mailbox here by that name550 no mailbox by that name is currently available (in reply to RCPT TO command)#550 5.1.1 RESOLVER.ADR.RecipNotFound; not found ##"

  • "Recipient address rejected: undeliverable address:"

  • "mailbox unavailable (in reply to RCPT TO command)"

  • "#5.1.0 Address rejected emailadres@domein.nl (in reply to RCPT TO command)"

  • "Recipient address rejected: User unknown in virtual alias table"

This means that the receiving address is not available or that it doesn't exist. Check if you've made a typographical error, otherwise the receiving mailserver could have a problem.

The message looks like spam

You see one of the following messages:

  • "550 High probability of spam"

  • "553 sorry, that domain isn't in my list of allowed rcpthosts"

  • "5.7.1 Unable to relay"

  • "Relay access denied. (in reply to RCPT TO command)"

This means that the receiving mailserver sees your message as spam.

  • "5.7.1 rejected content, black listed"

In this case the server is on a 'black list'. If you get a message like this, please contact the Carerix Helpdesk

Mailbox of the recipient is full

You see one of the following messages:

  • "Recipient's mailbox is full, message returned to sender."

  • "Mail quota exceeded."

In this case, the mailbox of the receiver is full. Let the receiver know that the mailbox is full. Once the mailbox is cleaned up, the recipient is able to receive mail.

Problems with the server of the recipient

You see the following message:

  • "Delivery temporarily suspended: SASL authentication failed; server [server met IP nr] said: 535 Sorry."

This is a technical problem. The administrator of the receiving mailserver can investigate the problem and fix it.
